A letter from Santa

We were lucky enough this year to work with Silver Bell Express – The exclusive parcel service of the North Pole on helping people get letters directly from Santa Claus.

It was a wonderfully fun project, and we’re excited to help spread the magic in future years.

Since the last parcel sleigh has left the north pole, and the crew up there has turned their energy to preparing for Christmas Eve, I thought I would share the letter that Santa sent to our own little guy this year.

Thanks to all who helped us spread a bit of magic, and I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!

It’s Christmas Time!

I just wanted to take a second here and say WOO HOO!! I love Christmas and all the magic that it brings.

Of course, we’re doing our part to keep the magic alive. We’re happy to be helping Silver Bell Express deliver letters from Santa to people everywhere!

Don’t settle for those fakes printed on crappy office store stationary. This is beautiful letter, bound with leather, sealed with Santa’s personal wax seal, and shipped in a durable tube. $14 for your first letter, and $10 for each additional.

The pipeline

One of the blessings of being a small business owner is that you get your way. You can run the business how you want, and everything gets done the way you want it to.

One of the curses of being a small business owner is that you have to do everything.

Today, my curse is the pipeline.

The pipeline is that lineup of projects that you have coming up. It’s the list of clients that have signed the deal, but the kickoff date of their project hasn’t come up yet. Even though you’re not working on the project itself… there’s a lot of work to be done to fill and care for the pipeline.

I spend at least 30%-40% of my time trying to build and maintain my pipeline of projects. That may seem like a big number, but it’s what I’ve found necessary to keep a reasonably solid flow of work through the studio. That all includes prospecting for new projects, courting clients, bidding/estimating and, if things align just right, signing a deal.

Even after the deal is signed, I keep in regular contact with the client until the work actually begins. I’ve found that if I let things sit too long, even if the project is spec’d out to the letter, scope creep or changes can happen before we’ve even gotten underway.

So, why is the pipeline my curse today? Well, in addition to needing to divert attention for family, I made some compromises on my schedule that I shouldn’t have. I stole time that should have been spent on the pipeline for other projects, and now I’m feeling the hurt. It’s a lesson I’ve learned twice before… and I’m really hoping the third time is the charm.

As I wrap things up on this Friday afternoon, I can count 43 messages sent today. Some are attempts to set up appointments on existing business. Some are introductions, and some are final estimates in the hopes we’ll strike a deal. All of them are vital for the success of my little studio.

In my fantasy world, projects would be all lined up for me so I could just focus on the creative process. Until my fantasy world magically becomes real, I have to break out the hustle and make the deals happen.

Let’s get caught up, shall we?

I have many many words in my head about recent events, but don’t have nearly enough energy to get them all out into a post. Let me just outline some of the larger points.

Surgery for Dad

My Dad went in for a major gastrointestinal surgery that should have been performed laproscopicly… or endoscopically… I don’t know. Whichever one means that they would do it with a few small incisions. Recovery was planned to be intense but relatively short compared to the ‘old’ open way to perform the surgery.

Once they got going, the doctor discovered a lot more trouble than they originally anticipated. It became an open surgery with a significantly longer and tougher recovery.

All that seems relatively benign until you add into the mix the last time my dad was in the hospital. A simple, but urgent, surgery spiraled quickly into medicine reactions, heart attacks and a solid stint in the Intensive Care Unit with little assurance that he was coming out alive. To me, any unplanned change of course sounded way too familiar.

Thankfully though, he came through surgery very well. His doctor is very confident of the success of the surgery, and my dad is left with an insanely cool line of staples down his torso.

So far, recovery is a total pain in the ass, but it comes with some good pills for my dad that make for funny conversations.

A terrible fall

They day after the surgery mentioned above, my mother realized that my 98 year old grandpa, who lives about an hour away, was unreachable by phone. He had been up to visit a few days prior and complained a bit of being dizzy. A flurry of calls went around the family, and while en-route to my grandpa’s house, my sister got a call from a neighbor who went to check on him. He took a nasty fall sometime the night before, and was heading to the local hospital in an ambulance.

Over the remainder of the day we coordinated between the two hospitals to have him transported to the local hospital (the same one my dad was in), since the care he was getting at the podunk facility out west was far less than stellar. There was a lot of talk that it was uncertain if he would make the trip… but in the end the Docs gave the green light to move.

He’s now recovering under the watchful eye of a small army of doctors and nurses. He looks dreadful, but improving daily. He’s having a tough time remembering what happened, but he’s joking with the nurses and I can see is personality clearly through the bruises. He has a very long hard road of rehabilitation but, for now at least, he’s still with us.

My heart absolute breaks when I think of him stuck on the floor bloody and bruised, trying to find some comfort while waiting to be found.

My world

These two men represent the whole of the male parental influence in my life. They are husbands, fathers, brothers and friends to everyone in my world. Between them, they taught me absolutely everything I know that is of any importance to me as a man.

Both of them hold a place in my heart that could never be fully explained. They are giants to me. Heros that have no equal.

I cannot tell you how it pains me to see them hurting. Each labored breath and painful grown just stabs at my soul.

I also cannot tell you how it inspires me to see their strength. They’re healing. Slowly but surely, they are healing.

The world keeps moving

As an epilogue to this tale of woe… the world went right on and kept turning while we diverted attention to our loved ones.

I run a small business that doesn’t have sick days or vacation time built into the scheme just yet. I’m afraid the time spent at the hospital and away from the studio will come with the gift of mountains of email, work and a delayed pipeline of projects.

*sigh*

But such is the life we chose.

I’m attempting to climb out of the backlog tonight and get some new deals in the works. Keep some good vibes coming our way, as I think we’ll need them for just a bit longer.

A Plug To Pay The Bills

If you’re one of the 12 loyal readers of this blog, you’ll know that Janey and I launched a fun new venture back in July. It’s the first online ad network tailored exclusively to theme park fans, memorabilia hounds and amusement industry enthusiasts. It’s been an very fun road so far, and we’re so happy with the response we’ve had from both publishers and advertisers on the network.

You’ll see that I actually carry Maingate Ads in the sidebar of this very site. (I know that my personal site content isn’t exactly theme park specific… call it an effort in dogfooding, or being willing to use my own product.)

Anyway, this post is an effort to feature this months great advertisers and show you the kind of killer deals available every day on Maingate ads.

Disneyland Resort

If you’re going to Disneyland anytime soon, be sure to use this link to save at least 20% at Disneyland Resort Hotels. Most dates now through 12/16. Book by 12/1/10!

Disney Gift Card

And finally, if you’re looking to give the gift of magic for Christmas this year… or at least money you can spend in magical places… look no further than Disney Gift Card. It’s good for nearly all things Disney at Disney Parks, Disney Store & more!

A quick little project

My wifey and I got to talking while taking a drive today. She wanted to have some personalized note cards made for business and/or personal use. I thought it might be fun to share a tiny window into our evening.

Sorry for the shitty phone pics… it’s all I’ve got.

A quick conversation in the car leads to this…

A few minutes in front of my computer leads to this…

Then some chatting about color leads to this…

And a some time making paper selections and color matching leads to this…

And altogether, it leads to a happy wifey!

*Update*
Janey wrote a post about them too… I’m happy that she digs them.

You were asleep

  • Me: Nanna, why did you poop downstairs?
  • Nanna:
  • Me: Nanna?
  • Nanna:
  • Me: Nanna!!
  • Nanna: What?
  • Me: Why did you poop downstairs last night.
  • Nanna: My stomach was upset and you were asleep.
  • Me: You could have woken me up if it was an emergency.
  • Nanna: I didn’t want to wake you. You were already having a hard night with Gavin wailing so much. I tried to hold it… but just couldn’t.
  • Me: Well, I appreciate that, but I would have preferred you waking me up to cleaning up your poop from the carpet.
  • Nanna: I’m sorry.
  • Me: I know. Just wake me up next time, ok?
  • Nanna: Ok.
  • Me:
  • Nanna: Are there any bones left from the steaks on Sunday?
  • Me: Do you think that’s what gave you the runs?
  • Nanna: Maybe.
  • Me: No.

Silver Bell Express

I’d like to welcome my first guest author to this blog!

I asked Kristoffen to come let my readers know about some really fun news. It’s a project that he’s worked very hard on for a long time, and I nearly lost it with excitement when he told me it’s ready for the world.

And so, without any further interruption from me, here’s the news…

Hi there everyone!
First, I’d like to thank Rustin for the invitation to make an announcement here on his site. I’m very excited to see years of work finally come together and help spread some magic all over the world.

My name is Kristoffen, and I am a 5th generation Parcel Elf at Silver Bell Express – The exclusive parcel service of the North Pole. I am just one of many elves whose mission is to deliver each and every package that’s sent to and from the North Pole (with the exception of the Big Guy’s toy sack, of course… that’s another Elf team entirely). I’m proud to carry on the tradition of my father’s father’s father’s father’s father, to quickly & safely deliver every magical package. “On Time, Snow or Shine!” as they say…

The reason I’m here today is to let you know about a brand new service we’re offering! I’ve recently been promoted to Chief Parcel Elf in charge of a new department called Santa Claus Personal Service or S.C.P.S. Our sole purpose is to provide direct express service to Santa Claus himself!!

The Big Guy has always loved writing to the boys and girls from his nice list, but with time crunches around Christmas and delays with some other delivery services, he never seemed to have enough time to write to each and every one of you. I am so excited that Silver Bell Express has finally opened a separate office dedicated to Santa Claus’ personal outgoing mail. And it’s just an honor that Santa chose me to head it up. I’ve got my boots in a jingle just thinking about it!

We’re making sure the Big Guy is supplied with the finest parchment and ink for each unique letter. They’ll be packaged in durable tubes and kept private with Santa’s personal wax seal. A real, beautiful and totally unique letter directly from Santa Claus himself. Definitely an item you’ll want to keep in your memory box forever.

We’re still getting our reindeer in a row, but we’ll be kicking things off soon. Click below to visit our new website, and don’t forget to drop your email address in the box so I can let you know when Santa is ready to start sending letters.

Thanks so much, and get ready for the Merriest Christmas yet!!

Happy shut in… er… freelancer

I re-read my post from yesterday and, while it definitely sounded the way I felt yesterday (read=bored and kind of cranky), it didn’t convey a complete enough picture about how I feel about being a freelancer… er, well let me talk more about that.

There are really two forces at work that I want to address. First is being a freelancer, and second is working from home. My post from yesterday was really less about being a freelancer and more about working from home. So, even if the titles of these posts would lead you to belive otherwise… what I want to talk about is working from home.

There are a million articles out there about why working from home is both awesome and horrible. I’m not really here to say why it is or isn’t anything. I’m just going to tell you why it kicks ass for me.

  • Family Time
I have a son that I adore, and a wife that lights up my life. Working at home gives me the chance to pop out of my office at any time, for any reason at all. Sometimes I just need a dose of family. They are my reason for doing what I do. We can take a walk, run some errands or just chill in the back yard any damn time we want, and I love it. I also love that I’m not missing a second of our little boy experiencing his firsts and learning about the world. It’s just too good to miss.
  • My shop dog
You can think it’s corny all you like, but I have a dog named Nanna who is my pal and working companion. She is at my side pretty much everywhere I go. When I run errands, she’s in the seat next to me. When I take a walk, she’s trotting by my side. And when I’m at work, she’s lying by my chair. Can’t take the dog to the cubicle farm…
  • My shop, my rules
Sometimes I mow the lawn at 11AM on a Tuesday just because I can. I love that when I need to take a few minutes or hours to do something for myself or for my family, I can just do it. I don’t have to ask anybody, or give anybody a heads up. My work bends around my life… and that’s just how it is.

So there’s just a few things that make freelancing from home a great thing for me. Of course it comes with it’s own set of challenges and sacrifices… but that’s not what I’m here to talk about today.

What it really comes down to is this. I have complete freedom to be the husband and father I want to be. And, while I love my work very much, I love my family so much more. Working from home helps me make sure that I never neglect my family for work.

Shut in… er… Freelancer

I haven’t left my house today. Well, that’s not entirely true… I did make it out to the mailbox once, the driveway once, and the front yard to turn on some sprinklers. But that was the extent of time I spent outside of the four walls I call home.

Not every day is quite like this one. I usually get out for a walk, or at least a quick drive somewhere at some point in the day. Today is just one of those few that a chance never popped up. It’s days like today I can feel the beginnings of cabin fever.

It’s a strange life I live. It’s incomprehensible to some of my friends that I don’t get up and go to work in the morning in the same way that they do. I don’t kiss my family goodbye and start a commute. I don’t call during my lunch hour, and have a big greeting when I come home for the day.

I get up when my son wakes up (usually in between 5AM-6AM). We go downstairs and play with toys while watching whatever Disney cartoon I can convince the crappy downstairs DVD player to accept. Then sometime around 8:00 we’ll come upstairs and have a little breakfast with Phineas and Ferb (I’ll have to write another post on how much I love Phineas and Ferb, seriously). Sometime during the breakfast window I’ll pop in and say good morning to my lovely bride. Most days she springs right out of bed and throws the curtains open with a song… other times, I may have to entice her with the promise of strong coffee. But it’s usually the first one.

We trade positions, her taking over with the boy and me stepping in to get ready for the day. A quick shower, throw some clothes on… then my trusty dog and I bid the family farewell for the journey down the hall to work. I can usually make the commute in 30 or 40 seconds, unless I hit lingering traffic of toys from the previous day. But I usually keep moving at hallway speeds all the way in.

I spend the day working as hard as I can. I hear all the goings-on of the house and I’ll poke my head out if things sound particularly interesting. I pop into the kitchen to make a sandwich for lunch, and back to work for the second half of the day.

Around 5:00 I call it a day and come out to help with final dinner preparations. We eat, play for a while… then it’s bath and bedtime. Each day brings a slightly different set of events, but it’s usually a variation on this theme.

As you can see, it’s not difficult at all for me to spend entire days inside. I don’t see the sky beyond my office window unless I make it happen. Like I said earlier, I usually do make it happen. If it’s a run to the store for a drink, or a family walk after dinner, I try to get SOME outside time.

Today, I didn’t. Today I spent just about every waking second inside and looking at a computer screen. Work is busy and new requests are stacking up. Given all the problems to have, being busy is probably the one that sucks the least.

I’m feeling the beginnings of stir craziness. I’ll have to make sure I see the sun a little more tomorrow.

So, there’s a little slice of my life. Cool eh? Thanks for letting me vent some useless nothingness out into the world.
