The Smell of Ozone

Since I am a total geek, and find myself interested in such things I do know what ozone smells like. However as a friend just pointed out itis not any easy odor to describe. Any time you get a lot of arcing and sparking you get ozone. It is a very distinctive yet subtle odor butit doesn’t really seem to have very many good parallels in everyday life. If you have ever serviced anything electromechanical in nature, like a 1960 pinball machine, all the arcing and sparking of the relays and stepper switches make ozone. So, if you discount the smell of old transformer and baked relay coils, when a pinball machine is operating you can smell ozone on the inside. I know that doesn’t help much if you have never opened an old pinball machine.

Laser printers make a little ozone. You can kinda smell it when you open the printer to clear a paper jam but the odor of melted toner and the “heat” smell tend to mask it if you don’t already know what ozone smells like.

Arc welding makes ozone so you can kinda smell it there. But again the “metal” smell gets in there too so it is hard to detect if you don’t already know that to look for.

Sewing machines make an ozone smell because of the arcing of the brushes in the little motor. I think that it probably the best real life example I can think of.

To describe the smell of ozone the best I can do is something like this: You know how a camp fire smells when the rain puts it out – the smell of fresh wet ashes. New lessen that smell by about half, then couple that with a an extremely slight odor of gasoline and you get something close to the smell of ozone.

Hope that helps…

Till next time.

PS: I got to thinking more about the smell of ozone and came up with two things that produce that odor without other smells mixed in: slot cars and model trains (especially the old Lionel trains). The ozone smell comes from the arcing of the brushes or wheels on the track as the cars or train go around the track.

bored bored bored

Well now that the new design is up and running I’m just kind of in tweak mode. I’m moving things around a pixel at a time and messing with things. The header turned from puppies, to summer mountains, to winter mountains… and I’m sure it will change again before I am done.

You might be thinking “but Rustin, what about real content. Nobody visits a site for it’s design if there’s nothing to see once they arrive” and you’d be right. I’m just avoiding it. I’m sure I will get something really flashy up soon… but for now I just can’t get my brain in that mode.

So until my brain goes into that mode I’ve taken up the wonderful task of LAUNDRY! I know I know… it’s what you have always wanted to do, and look at this, I’m living your dream.

Ok… so if anyone actually reads this I will be shocked… but I’m writing anyway. I’ve got two loads in the washer, and two in the dryer… so I’m in waiting mode. And this is a wonderful way to wait.

alright. I’m goin to do something semi productive.

until next time,

Another new design

Well as you can see, I’ve spent some time on yet another new design. This one is powered completely by CSS and it was all kinds of fun to learn. Prior to this I dabbled with CSS but never really committedd to it completely. I didn’t realize it was so easy to implement.

So now that this is up I have to come up with content. You know, I really like to do development and new designs… but it’s always the content I can never finish. I’m just not good at pulling full paragraphs out of my @#$&(. Ahh well… I’m sure I will figure it out.

more to come, but until next time,

Wow it’s been so long

Well, in the grand scheme of things it hasn’t been so long. But a lot has happened since I my last entery here.

I guess the biggest was the trip Janey and I took to Utah. We went up to Bear Lake with my family. It was a good time. I forgot how much fun it was to swim in a body of fresh water. After spending time at the ocean it’s very refreshing to come off the beach not feeling all crusty and nasty.

While in Bear Lake we saw the Rasberry days parade… very rinky dink and hokey, but all kinds of fun. The thing that sticks out most in my mind is when the royalty float came trundling by, one girl was at the top with a Magic Music Days t-shirt on. Janey and I were cracking up. All the other girls were in formals, and she was proud as puch about her tshirt.

My parent rented wave runners and they were all kinds of fun. I dumped Janey and I off one of them twice and another time she actually dumped me off the back while staying on. It was really fun, but I got more water up my nose then ever in my life. As soon as I fell of the back, she hit the throttle so I got a blast of water in the face. It was really fun.

So we did all kinds of fun stuff at the lake, probably too many to mention here. It was fun, and I’m sure we will get a chance to do it again sometime.

So…. now I’m at work in the Satalite office at DCA. Nothing really going on. So I’m online just finding things to do.

I guess I will leave it at that for now.

Till next time,

Awake when I shouldn’t be

I guess the last time I posted was the tail end of Cody’s trip to CA. The night ended great. After a fun day at Disneyland (and bits at DCA) we finished up the night with Fantismic! and Fireworks from the Tower B seating in front of the river. Thats one of the perks of my job that I will always love. You don’t have to wait four hours but get the best seat in the house for one of the most innovative shows ever staged. (you can tell I’m a huge F! fan.

Well after that I dropped Cody and crew off at their hotel, said our g’byes and Janey and I headed home for bed. Now after those 3ish days of full on theme park excitement I was totally beat. I got home at about 1:00 and hit my bed. I don’t even remember the path from my door to my pillow. I think I was asleep even before I laid down.

Today when it was time for Janey to go to work (at noon) she tried to call me. I was still asleep so it took her a few calls to get me awake. When I finally realized there was a real world waiting outside the dream one I got a little grumpy. Just kind of a morning thing lately for me 🙂 My bed seems to wrap around me at that point and won’t let me go. Anyway, I finally got the phone. It was Janey wanting to get some lunch before work.

So we went to China China for lunch… It’s really called grand china something or other but I just gave it that name and it stuck. There is a crazy chinese lady that works there who is affected by one of two conditions 1) she was part of a botox beta test gone totally awry or 2) it’s really a man who found a stash of old chinese lady masks and is running from the law. Either way this person has no facial emotion whatsoever and speaks terrible english. She has apparently been promoted to Manager (as noted on her name-tag) and it’s a complete mystery what kind of approval process that went through. But thats another conversation for another day.

So since I slept quite late today I’m just not feeling the sleep bug right now. It’s a little past 3:00 am and I’m just not tired. So I put my Eddie Izzard DVD on and I’m blogging till I get tired.

Problem is I don’t have much to say. so for now this will have to do.

Till next time,

The end of the day

I just never knew I had so much to say. since putting this blog up I’ve thought of tons of things I want to talk about. The trick is actually taking time out to put it on paper. I wish there was some way to just think it and it would show up on the screen. Since I’m only a big geek and not a Super Geek like I used to be, my typing skills have roughened up a bit. I don’t go so fast… and I have lots of errors.

Alright… on to what I really have to say.

I posted some stuff earlier today about my visit to DCA. When I wrote that, we were in a little mid-day nap break. So I will start from there.

I picked Cody and crew up at about 7:30 and headed over to Downtown Disney for a bite of dinner. We decided on Rainforest Cafe. Always a favorite of mine. Janey and I love to eat there.

I really wish there was much more to the story. But after dinner Janey and I headed home since she has to get up at 6:30 for work. And Cody and crew just called me when they needed a ride home from disneyland. I guess they got onto at least 3 attractions in that last hour or so. Splash Mtn, haunted mansion, and pirates… so .. I think a good time was had by all.

Until Next Time…

Another day… another trip to Disneyland

My friend Cody and his wife Jamie are in town this week. They also brought along Jamie’s sister Brooke for a fun filled trip to Disneyland. They actually got in yesterday afternoon and we went for a little drive down to the beach to see the ocean and stuff. We got some dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory right by the beach down on the Balboa peninsula and took off.

I shouldn’t skim over that like I did, since the whole dinner thing was a much larger project than I could have anticipated. It seems Jamie is quite the picky eater. She eats sea food, but not fish or shell fish of any kind. I was told this basically means the only things she eats that come from a body of water are shrimp and lobster. Under normal circumstances I’m sure thats not really a problem at all… but comon.. were by the ocean here people. when you stop into a sea-side fish place… they mean fish place. There’s nothing else on the menu. So we walked around looking for a place with a suitable menu. stopping at one little joint after another all the while I’m thinking ‘we’re gonna end up at the spaghetti factory’. This is only amusing since thats the restaurant I suggested on the way in, but was shot down since they could go to that restaurant in Utah. Oh well. To make a long story short, we did to there… and it was really good.

So now back to Today. We got going a little after 10:00 and headed for California Adventure. It was all of their first times to DCA and they seemed to like it a lot. I was a little annoyed though. It seemed like every leg of our trip was affected by the recent budget cuts that Disneyland has in place. Everything from cast members not being allowed to use certain parking lots, to no longer letting us have a discount on anything but one day one park tickets. I was planning on helping Cody out with his park hoppers… but it seems I no longer get a discount on those. I don’t know if that’s a product of the cuts but it was annoying nonetheless.

Well thats enough rambling for now. I have so much to say about Aladdin and D.U.H. and some other offerings at the park… but I will save those for a later rant that I feel coming on. Right now I’m supposed to be napping since we are going back to the park in a little over a half and hour. So until next time.

It may not seem like much…

It may not seem like much, but this little blog system was a lot of work. Not really the system itself, but making it look like the rest of my site. Kind of a pain in the butt to be honest. I’m not really skilled with CSS (cascading style sheets) and this whole things is built on em. So customization was a slow process.

So far it’s looking pretty good… I’m sure I will be tweaking and changing a lot as days go by, but a good start.

I have to sit back and thing how long I’ve been working on this. 6 hours. Really, would anyone but a total geek work on something like this for his personal site for 6 full hours. Mind you thats 6 full hours in the middle of the night when there’s a busy day ahead. Ahh well. at this point I’m staying up all night anyway, and what else am I gonna do. Thats right, nothing. So I will keep working on it till sun-up. 🙂

In the beginning

Welcome to my first Blog (weblog)

“What’s all this about” you ask. Well nothing really. I’m just going to use this as a sounding board for anyone who happens across my little area online here. Probably just family and friends who link through emails and such. It’ll probably be a place to tell stories and give a day by day account of my life here in CA. (there were 2 previous lives to my ‘California’ life… tentatively titled ‘Omni’ and ‘Young’ but you’ll hear more about those later)

Not sure exactly who will be interested in reading them… but I’m sure there is someone. I figure if there are people in this world who will listen to someone like Barbara Strisand sing, then they will surely read my rantings. it would be much easier on their ears.

This site is becoming my little testing ground for stuff I would like to try on other folks sites. This blog system for example started out as just a test of a Content Management System for a web client I have. I loved it so much, and was learning all kinds of new stuff… I just couldn’t help but put it into action on my own site.

If you want to talk about anything I’m saying here feel free to leave a comment by hitting ‘comments’ link below. I wanna hear what you have to say.
