Mickey visits my home town

Some of you may not know this but Mickey and Disneyland took to the skies with a 100-foot tall, Mickey Mouse-shaped hot air balloon dubbed “The Happiest Balloon On Earth”. The crew is traveling throughout the western United States and Canada on a 12-stop tour.

It just so happens that this morning they stopped in my old neck of the woods.

Here is a few photos of the baloon inflating in front of the Salt Lake City-County building.

Goofy’s Play Area

I recently read a small feature (nevermind where) about the newly opened play area in Toontown with the following text:

“When Walt Disney developed his first theme park, he intended it to be a place where children and adults alike could share in the fun.”

Just to the right of that is a photo of the sign outside the play area reading:
Goofys

“Goofy’s Playhouse is intended for the enjoyment of children ages 2-5 years old.”

So we intend for children as young as two, and adults as old as 5 to enjoy this attraction together. This specifically just seems like somebody is trying desperately to shoehorn this square little “Waltism” into a decidedly round hole.

I’ve never really been a fan of these age specific areas in the parks. We should make magic that can be experienced together. Just because a playground is a different shape/color/texture doesn’t make it any different then the one behind the school. While this playground may be useful, I feel like the whole concept is just uninspired.

Lets look back to what did happen when a really creative play area was needed… Tom Sawyer Island. Now that’s a playground you can be in without even realizing you’re being spoon fed a jungle gym. The complex as a whole was designed with no specific age range in mind. There are features for every age, always with the story at it’s heart.

Goofys

If you visit Goofy’s Playhouse, you won’t see parents having fun WITH children, you will see parents waiting while their children have fun. That is exactly what Disneyland was built to avoid. Walt himself said he thought of Disneyland while waiting for his girls to ride a merry-go-round. He wanted a place that he could have fun with them too.

I walk by this ‘new improved’ area and just want to take a big ‘ol nap. Doesn’t make me happy, doesn’t elicit any kind of emotion really. So it’s just wasting good space where space is at a premium.

Ok… that’s my rant.

The French Quarter… really, it is.

Kimberly Williamson Butler is running for Mayor of New Orleans. The header of her website features a photo of said fair city… oh wait. Look closer at that background!

This is most definetly Disneyland’s New Orleans Square, home of the Pirates of the Caribbean, The Blue Bayou, and Club 33… right here in Anaheim, CA. I’ve spent many hours standing in line for my clam chowder at the Royal Street Varanda directly behind where Ms. Butler is standing. Damn politicians.

Update: Disney Looking Into Butler’s Unauthorized Use of Photo NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Disneyland is looking into a New Orleans mayoral candidate’s unauthorized use of a photo of its theme park on a campaign Web site. Criminal district Court Clerk Kimberly Williamson Butler’s Web site features the photo, which shows a portion of the California park that resembles the French Quarter. A Disney public relations official says the matter has been referred to the park’s legal department. Butler appears in the foreground of the photo, but it is not clear whether her image was simply superimposed on the scene by the Web site designer. Butler has not said why the photo was chosen instead of an authentic New Orleans cityscape. Butler is among 23 candidates running for mayor of New Orleans in elections this month. She has made news recently for being arrested on contempt of court charges and for comparing herself to Ghandi and Nelson Mandela after being released from jail last month. The arrest stemmed from her refusal to transfer authority for the cleanup of the court’s hurricane-flooded property room to an outside judge who was appointed to take on that task by the state Supreme Court.

There is real magic here.

Today, while digging into some past events for research, I ran across an email that I sent on April 2nd of last year. The timeliness of me finding this almost exactly one year from the day it was written is purely coincidence. I just sort of tripped on it while combing through an archived file.

To set this up, let me fill you in on just a bit of background. This was written to a client who had been through a bit of a ringer. She had tried to get a hold of someone at Disneyland about planning an event for her family. She was given a runaround and basically got the feeling, from whoever she spoke to, that her small group just wasn’t worth the time. This makes my blood boil, but I won’t elaborate on it now…

To make a long story short, she made a bit of a stink (rightly so, might I add) and caught the attention of some higher-ups over on the sales side. She got some special attention from some senior folks over there before she got to me. Once I talked to her on the phone, we were well on our way to planning some really cool things that the resort had never done before.

Even though her name was passed to me with a “guest recovery” sort of warning, we got to know each other and she became one of my favorite Disney fans. Before that though, she sent me a message a little worried that I had been tasked to kiss her “you-know-what” because the poor way Disney treated her in the beginning…

… here was my response:

A great day in a new place…

I know I’m a little late for this update, but sometimes I have a hard time buckling down and just getting stuff written. If you read Janey’s blog you already know about the trip we took last friday, but I’m gonna tell it anyway.

Lets start with a little back-story (I’ll try and keep it short)… Quite some time ago Janey and I planned a little trip down to Chinatown in LA. We got some directions from Janey’s roommate that turned out to be terrible, and we were lost in LA. We decided to ditch the chinatown idea and ended up driving just a little further to see the cool movie mecca that is Hollywood Blvd. When we got there hunger struck and tempers ran high, so we just bagged the whole deal and drove home. Ever since that day I’ve wanted to go back and really see what’s around (I’m pretty sure that Janey always felt the same).

Now some things you need to know for the rest of the story:

  • Janey loves Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp”
  • I majorly messed up her birthday this year so I really needed to redeem myself with Valentines Day

Many ideas crossed my mind while trying to figure out what I was going to do for Valentines day. I consulted several people for feedback on my ideas and each one seemed to be a winner, but none of them quite felt right to me. So I kept looking and I ran across what I thought would be the perfect activity for us. I’ll try and spare you the nitty gritty details of my discovery. I’ll just say that in late January I found this:

Lady and the Tramp

What could be better! Her favorite Disney movie in all it’s re-mastered big screen glory, in one of the most wonderful theaters in the country! I contemplated it for a few days and just couldn’t think of anything that was going to top it (also taking into account my post-christmas, post-travel, pre-wealthy budget). So I called and found one of her days off and got the tickets! Granted, it actually was a few days before the REAL Valentines day… but I’m hoping that won’t be an issue.

So since we were already getting out of Anaheim I thought it would be cool to just make a whole day-date sort of thing out of it. So we added a stop in Long Beach to the itinerary. A stop to Roscoe’s Chick & Waffles. Don’t ask too many questions about this one… it’s just something Janey has wanted to do for a long time, and this day was all hers.

So after a few hurdles in the morning, we finally got on the road!

Our stop for chicken and waffles was great. It’s a good restaurant with a funny menu. Everything tasted great, and I’m sure we’ll go back sometime. Now ON TO LOS ANGELES!

The air was hazy, and the traffic was bad, but we finally arrived on Hollywood Blvd. and the world famous Walk of Fame. There was so much to see that I’m not event sure where to start. Our show tickets weren’t until 7:15 PM and we arrived at a little after 2:00 PM. We had plenty of time to wander and just hang out.

We saw so much cool stuff. Here… I’ll just link to pictures of some of the highlights:

So as dusk settled over Los Angeles, the neon shined bright and our showtime creeped ever closer. We decided that before the movie we needed to stop in the Disney Soda Fountain & Studio store. It had been recommended to me by several folks. It was really fantastic and I could really tell that I was on Disney property from the second I walked through the door. We were greeted by a smiling fellow in a chef’s costume. We wandered for a few minutes through the store portion of the place, then sat down for some wonderful treats. I got a huge banana split and Janey got a coke float. It was really really good, and the place was just really nice.

Now it was finally time to head for the theater (not difficult at all since it’s right next door). So exited the soda fountain crossing over the Walk of Fame stars of Donald Duck and Disneyland. And in just a hop, skip and jump we were very first in the VIP line with tickets in hand. We weren’t waiting too long when in one choreographed movement two costumed ushers opened the large front glass doors. An older gentleman walked up to Janey and I with a very kind welcome and dropped the ropes in front of us so we could enter the theater.

Once we got into the lobby another very nice person directed us to the VIP counter for our free soda and popcorn. It all happened so fast that we hardly had to think. It was in the door, got the treats, and we were into our seats inside of one minute. Every face we saw was smiling. Every person who spoke to us was kind and very welcoming, and this was on the last show of the day! I’m sure they were all on the end of their shifts and excited to get home, but we felt like we were the first guests of the day. The El Capitan cast really does Disney proud. We had nothing but wonderful things to say about every person we encountered.

El Cap StageOK so lets talk for a second about the theater! This place really is a palace. It lives up to every bit of marketing hype I heard. Its big and beautifully restored to a condition that looks brand new. The colors are vibrant and the fabrics are plush. And as icing on the cake, the background music that you hear as you enter the theater is coming from an organist on stage playing a fantastic restored Wurlizer organ that must have just under a million keys.

This sort of preshow entertainment is just simply a lost art but it makes all the difference in the world. It puts everyone in a good mood. I really could go on for pages about the preshow alone… but lets get moving along.

When showtime rolled around, the organ on stage floated gracefully into a trap door as the theater manager took a mic just off the stage right apron. He extended a big thank you to the organist and welcomed the audience to the theater. Again, this is such a simple thing that makes all the difference in an entertainment experience. He made a very simple but effective announcement about keeping phones and such quiet and then kicked off the show.

The lights went down, and the trailers began. After 3 trailers for other disney movies that will be at the El Cap later this month the main drape closed on the stage. I was a little confused at this point since I’m so used to going from trailers right into the movie. The drape had only been down a fraction of a second when it started on it’s way back up. As it raised we could see that it was revealing something new, it wasn’t a full sized movie screen, but a smaller 4:3 aspect ratio screen that was probably only 10′ across and bordered by a beveled trim. Very small by todays movie screen standards and clearly not made for a feature film. The proscenium lighting dropped and the screen came to life with an all to familiar title screen for “A Walt Disney Mickey Mouse Cartoon… Puppy Love”. In honor of valentines day they were playing one of the cutest vintage Disney shorts featuring Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and FiFi.

There really is nothing that compares to seeing these original Disney shorts in the theater as they were intended. Simply wonderful.

As the short came to a close the drape flew up to reveal Mickey and Minnie live on stage dancing to a wonderful orchestral waltz. It was a cute little moment that I enjoyed quite a bit.

And finally when Mickey and Minnie were finished another curtain opened up to reveal a full movie screen and Lady and the Tramp began in it’s fully restored, digital projected splendor.

What a great day this was… Memories made to last a lifetime.

It’s a great day.

Today is a good day. For the first time since my return from Florida, I’m feeling that I at least have a handle on my list of shtuff to do. It’s been a run of some difficult events with late nights and early mornings. But the payoffs were good and just about everyone walked away happy. I was able to stay home last weekend and just relax… and I did just that. I think the only times I saw the light of day were to take the trash out. It sounds boring, but it was just what I needed.

Looking back on the last two weeks I have to smile at all the wonderful stuff that happened.

  • I had the chance to meet, and work with, a dream team of Disney Imagineers on a one-in-a-lifetime type of event. It was so exciting for me personally, and I’m sure our guests had a great time
  • I’ve had the chance to stretch my creative legs on a few after hours event concepts. It’s exhausting but very fun to just be creative

So today I’ve been cranking away on plans for events coming next week and well into the Holiday Season. I can’t remember the last time I was working this far out in my schedule. It’s fantastic!

My family is coming down to CA this week. I’m guessing that just about everyone reading this will be here 🙂 I’m pretty dang excited to see everyone.

I know this entry is short… but I better get some work done this afternoon. I will try and post again soon.

Disney Online Podcasts

Alright folks, if you are a geek… and moreso, if you are a Disney geek this will be right up your alley. In conjunction with the new version of Apple iTunes that supports podcast subscriptions, Disney has jumped on the bandwagon with Disney Online Podcasts

Disney Podcasts

If you’re not a geek then lets chat for a second:
What is Podcasting?
Podcasting is the latest in on-the-go, on-demand technology. With podcasting, you can listen to radio programs or events whenever and wherever you choose. Podcasts are MP3 audio files that are automatically downloaded to your personal computer, and then transferred to an iPod or other MP3 player using a podcasting application.

What equipment do I need?
The basic requirements for podcasting are a computer (PC or Mac), podcasting software, and an Internet connection. For portability, an iPod or other MP3 player is needed.

How do I get started?
Simply download and install podcasting software onto your computer. Although applications vary, each should provide instructions on how to add podcast feeds to your list. Then, just check for the new podcasts and MP3s of your selected programs that will be on your computer and, if you are set up, on your MP3 player.
