A Beautiful Night

What a wonderful evening I just had. I have all kinds of pictures on my camera, but I just want to start typing before I’m too tired to do it. When I finally get the camera hooked up I will get some photos on for you.

My birthday was last week and my wonderful girlfriend asked me if we could do a little something to celebrate a week later. Now I don’t mind at all if we move any celebrations around. To be honest, my birthday has never been any real big thing to me. Fast forward to today and the festivities begin. All week I’ve been making Janey stick to her guns and not give away the surprise that she has been planning. You see she is notoriously bad at keeping secrets. It’s even so bad that last christmas neither of us could wait to give each other presents… so we opened them the day before christmas! 🙂

Anyway, so all last week she made sure that I didn’t plan anything on Sat. since I have no memory at all and have a tendency to let events in my life overlap one another. This usually happens because I don’t pay very close attention to schedules that aren’t work related. That is really kind of a funny thing. I actually plan for a living. I can pull off amazing things in tiny time constraints, and that takes a masterful grasp of logistics and planning. But my own life is a great big jumble. I don’t plan or remember when things are supposed to happen. I just go with the flow and things seem to turn out well. I guess it’s the same mentality of people who keep a very clean workspace but their homes are very messy.

VMK – Virtual Magic Kingdom

Virtual Magic Kingdom
I started a beta test of a killer new online computer game coming from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Online – Virtual Magic Kingdom. I didn’t get very far before I hit some application crashing bugs… but thats what betas are all about.

So far it looks great. As I learn more (and if it doesn’t violate any sort of confidentiality something-or-other) I will post here.

Update: VMK is in Public Beta now. That means you can go register and play for yourself at VMK.com! Have a blast.

A Mushy Little Reflection

Some events this morning made me take a step back for a few moments and just reflect on life. It sounds totally corny, but its true. So I opened a little window here and I’m just going to let my fingers fly across this keyboard. I should probably warn you that I’m in a odd mood (at least for me) so the words to follow may be overly mushy and filled with an almost naively positive outlook.

On May 15 I will be celebrating my 24th year on the earth, and the beginning of my third year with the mouse. As I’ve said so many times before, my life now is a night-and-day difference from both what it used to be, and what I pictured it to be when I was young. Well… scratch that, it’s exactly how I hoped it would be when I was young, but very different from those ‘adjusted’ dreams that everyone settles with when they realize that life can be hard.

My Life:
Everything I do is shared with a really wonderful girl. Janey and I both have a different story about how we met, and we are both sure we’re right… but we also both have fairly un-reliable long term memories. Who knows if we will ever remember the real chain of events that brought us together. I can only say that if those events hadn’t happened in just the way they actually did, I would be an empty shell. She’s the reason I work hard, she’s the reason I want to be better, she’s just my reason.

My Family:
I miss my family very much. Being 600 miles away from them isn’t easy at all. We still have a great relationship, but phone conversations don’t have the same feeling. I’m so thankful for every one of them, and I appreciate every bit of attention that any one of them has every paid me. Little brothers are a pain, and sons who don’t follow rules are embarrassing and frustrating. But in the end we all come together with no hard feelings. We are a safety net for each other that I think all of us have landed in at least once.

My parents led us by example to invite others into the family. When I was growing up, friends and loved ones were always welcome to visit, and there was always enough food for them to stay for a bite to eat. Even now with all the husbands and kids and other relationships, my family never ceases to amaze me. There’s more people to keep track of, in more places then ever, but we still feel close. It’s nice.

My Job:
I love what I do. I love who I do it for. And I really really love why I do it. And to be completely honest, I can say those things about every single position I have held since making the move to Disney. I have loved them all for different reasons, but in the end it comes down to those three points. If it were somehow possible, I would work every day in a new spot somewhere around the parks. I care a great deal about every guest that visits us here, and I love to help make those great stories that they will tell their friends when they get home. I’m as geeky and passionate about the magic now as I have ever been. I am the eternal optimist when it comes to the mouse, though I’m very quick to point out where we can improve. There is a laundry list of people that I have met in my time here that I couldn’t have dreamed. Everything from composers who have touched my life with their music, to performers who made memories for me when I visited Disneyland as a kid. It’s pretty amazing just how small a world it really is.

What I actually do for a living now is easy to explain, but sometimes hard to understand. I create/develop/plan/execute unique entertainment events. Everything from a birthday party with 5 guests, to a multi day event for thousands. I never do ‘cookie-cutter’ events, rather I create new stories and experiences for everyone that comes to visit. It’s more fun then any person should be allowed to have on a daily basis. It’s a dream come true just to be here, but to have landed in a perfect seat for me. There are so many more things I would like to try though… stay tuned for more on that. 🙂

I guess that’s enough for now… Thanks for reading.

Busy Busy Busy

There is really so much to talk about that I’m not sure where to start. The last few days, as you might imagine, have been rather busy. And by rather busy… I mean chicken with no head running sort of rather busy. It’s been a whirlwind of TV and radio broadcasts with some of my favorite people in the universe, and my favorite place in the universe.

Some items of note were a party for over 4,500 people in Paradise Pier that was plagued with problems that we’re now combing through to learn for the future, An early morning broadcast of segments of Good Morning America that went wonderfully, Each morning more then 40 live radio broadcasts from the parks, TV stand-ups and live hits from several stations from inside the parks. Another meeting with an amazing man who’s still going strong at 93.

A not so wonderful bit was rushing out to my car just after midnight in the pouring rain only to find that one of my car windows had been shattered by a piece of concrete. I’m still trying to figure out just how the piece of concrete found it’s way into the air to land in my back seat. … anyway, I had to take some time out before getting to work to set up for the broadcasts to tape over the vacant space.

here is a few shots I had time to snap on my phone:

A Musical History of Disneyland

Musical History of Disneyland Box Set

Last week I started reading about it here. Then it popped up over here

I actually started reading minute by minute accounts of other people experinces with ordering one of the 5000 limited edition sets that are being printed. I got all caught up in the frenzy and drama of the Disnayana types. AHHH I did it. I called Disney Direct and ordered my limited edition copy (hopefully mine will be one of the sets with the golden LP… not because I have a record player, but because it will look wonderful on my Disney wall).

I’m not going to be shown up by those wannabe Disney folks. I’m the real deal and, if there was any doubt before tonight, a total geek.

A little ski trip

It’s back to work today for Janey and I after a wonderful little ski trip to Big Bear Lake down here in So Cal. I’ve been skiing as long as I can remember but this is my first time skiing in CA. To be quite honest, I didn’t know there was anyplace to ski in the southern half of the state until I moved here. Come to find out there are a few great little skiing spots. I wouldn’t say that I’ve heard of any that rival some of my favorites back home (like Snow Basin, or Alta) but they are fun little spots to strap on the ‘ol sticks and slide down a hill.

Janey learned to ski last year during a trip to visit my family. She picked it up amazingly fast and seemed to really have a good time. Although she’s come out of it with some good sized bruises… I think I can safely say that she enjoys it quite a bit.

The plans for this trip all started when my family let me know they were going to take a little trip to Mesquite, NV and would like us to drive up and meet them. I new it was going to be tough to get any time off work since we’re ramping up for some very large events but I checked it out anyway. To make a long story short… no time off work for me. SO Janey and I decided that if we can’t take a real vacation this summer, we’re going to make our weekends count. And thus begins our Big Bear story.

Rather then bore you with long stories and such, I will give you some highlights of our trip.

Ok ok … It’s coming

I know it’s been too long since I’ve had a post with any real substance… I’m getting to it. If your close enough to be to have spoken on the phone you’ll know that things have been pretty busy the last few days. 4 events in 5 days doesn’t to nice things to a persons schedule.

But I’m getting to it.
